Family Accommodation
Various facilities are provided in each ward at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick for parents of patients who may have to stay in the Hospital with their child. Available are one fold-out bed besided each child’s bed or cot, so one parent or carer is able to sleep next to the child.
All patients are provided with meals. In addition, C2West has a fully equipped kitchen, with an oven, stove and fridge so parents and carers can prepare meals for themselves, and anything extra for their children.
As well as staying on the ward with your child, there are also other accommodation options available to you and/or your family:
Ronald McDonald House:
Ronald McDonald House Randwick is located on the grounds of SCH, at 149 Barker Street, Randwick. It is available for children who are being treated at the Hospital.
Ronald McDonald House has 21 bedrooms and 5 self-contained isolation units and a separate residential property.
The main House boasts a fully equipped kitchen, several indoor entertainment areas and a large covered alfresco dining area and playground, as well as laundry facilities and play areas for the children. Linen and blankets are provided.
Priority for admission to Ronald McDonald House is given to families travelling more than 100kms from the Hospital, whose child is newly diagnosed, has had a relapse of their disease or is terminally ill.
The cost of each room is $43 per night when the child is in Hospital and parents and siblings are staying in the House. It costs $60 per night when the child is staying at the House with their family. Families who live 100km or more away from the Hospital will have accommodation costs subsidised by the NSW Health scheme called IPTAAS.
IPTAAS is a transport and accommodation subsidy scheme that assists people (patients and one escort) in isolated and rural communities to gain access to specialist medical treatment not available in their own area. Randwick and Coogee have a number of hotels and lodges within a short distance from the Hospital – see here. If you choose to stay in private accommodation with your child, and live more than 100kms from the Hospital, you may be able to make a claim on some of these costs via the IPTAAS scheme.

If you have private health insurance then some insurers will reimburse parents accommodation expenses. It is important to talk with your health insurance fund to assess whether you are eligible.
